2013: Public Diplomacy and its actors

The theme will focus on “What is public diplomacy?” and the role of the different actors involved in public diplomacy. This includes government actors and non-government actors, including NGOs, businesses, and nonprofits, along with encompassing the tools of mediated public diplomacy and nation-branding.

ABOUT THE JOURNAL: Exchange: The Journal of Public Diplomacy

Exchange: The Journal of Public Diplomacy is a publication of the Association of Public Diplomacy Scholars at Syracuse University. The journal is an annual online and print publication and the first academic journal dedicated to public diplomacy.

The journal’s mission is to provide public diplomacy scholars and practitioners with a forum to share their research and experience to expand the field’s body of knowledge. We encourage submissions pertaining to international relations, public relations, media studies, cultural studies, nation-brand, and other related subjects.

UPCOMING ISSUE: Public Diplomacy: Actors & Actions in a globalized world

The 2013 theme will focus on “What is public diplomacy?” and the role of the different actors involved in public diplomacy. This includes government actors and non-government actors, including NGOs, businesses, and nonprofits, along with encompassing the tools of mediated public diplomacy and nation-branding.

DETAILS FOR SUBMISSIONS

All submissions should address a clearly defined issue, include thoughtful analysis, and relate to current public diplomacy literature. We welcome original works of field research, literature reviews of current or recent scholarship, and discussions of relevant conceptual and theoretical issues. All work should be the original work of the author(s) and adhere to Chicago Style, 16th edition.

PROPOSALS (Due March 15, 2013): Proposals should be 150-200 words in length, give an overview of the subject(s) to be discussed, and provide a summary of the article or paper’s primary theme(s). Proposals should also include the author’s name(s), primary email address, and working title of article or paper.

FEATURE ARTICLES: Articles should be 1,500-3,000 words in length. They should provide commentary on the impact of actors and their roles on public diplomacy.

RESEARCH PAPERS: Papers should be 4,000-8,000 words in length. All papers should be of original research regarding the impact of actors and their roles on public diplomacy.

All articles and papers will be due June 1, 2013. They will be returned with edits by mid-July and will be due back August 15, 2013. The 2013 edition will be launched at the 2013 Symposium presented by the Association of Public Diplomacy Scholars at Syracuse University in late October or early November 2013.

The deadline to submit proposals is 11:59PM on Friday, March 15, 2013. Please email all submissions to Article Co-Managers Maggie Moore at maggie@exchangediplomacy.com or Yao Xiao at yaoxiaoxy@exchangediplomacy.com.  All submissions should be in Microsoft Word format.
